Nationwide Out as Tour Sponsor, In at Memorial
Nationwide has done a little flippity-flop as far as sponsorship goes.
The PGA Tour announced today that Nationwide would become the title sponsor of Jack Nicklaus’s Memorial Tournament beginning in 2011.
The Memorial Tournament, Nationwide Insurance and the PGA TOUR announced today that Nationwide will become the presenting sponsor of the Memorial Tournament, beginning with the 2011 event. Nationwide and the Memorial have mutually committed to a six-year initial relationship through 2016.
As Nationwide inks that deal with The Memorial, Sean Martin of GolfWeek is reporting that after eight years of sponsorship, Nationwide will no longer be the sponsor of the PGA’s D-League following the 2012 season.
As this is breaking freaking news, there aren’t even any articles up yet. I’ll update the post with some information as it becomes available. For now, you’ll have to take Martin’s word for it, but I think it’s safe to say he’s right because among others, Paul Azinger, Ron Sirak (editor of Golf World) and Jason Sobel (ESPN golf writer). Also, I am breaking this news on my Twitter, so follow me.
UPDATE: Here is a link to Jason Sobel’s piece on the Nationwide Tour in need of a sponsor after 2012.
