Your Official ‘Cigar Guy’ Wrap Up
This picture might be the best photo in sports this year. The Daily Mail’s Mark Pain snapped the shot at the Ryder Cup two weeks ago and almost simultaneously the shot went viral, but not for the reason you may think.
Sure, Tiger Woods hit a chip shot that was reminiscent of Hunter Mahan’s on Monday afternoon, or like one that you would hit on a Sunday morning with your buddies. That’s rare enough. Then the ball was headed straight for a photographer who managed to snap a shot just before the ball hit the lens. But there was still something else. The guy on Tiger’s left with the mustache and cigar.

Taking some time off from posting has made it possible to leave no stone unturned and find out all the answers about who this guy actually is.
Directly after the fact, people assumed Cigar Guy was wearing a turban or something of the like and chomping on a cigar when in actuality, he was just a Miguel Angel Jimenez fan, as a photo from another angle proves. The “turban” was actually just a bad wig in an attempt to imitate The Mechanic.
From there, the search was on to find out who Cigar Guy was.
There were a lot of theories running around the internet, including one pegging him as a Sacha Baron Cohen disguise for the Borat star’s new project. Other websites were offering cash rewards to the person to come forward from behind the mustache and declare that they are the famous Cigar Guy.
During the hoopla, the photog joined CBS Early Show to talk about his shot and it’s internet fame.
As the search continued, countless photoshops were made placing Cigar Guy in famous pictures from the past, from posing with Lincoln, to the cover of a Beatles album, to becoming Steve Bartman, all the way to my personal favorite, knocking out Sonny Liston.
Still, after becoming a internet phenomenon, Cigar Guy did not come forward until The Mail on Sunday tracked him down at a detached house in South London where Rupesh Shingadia was living with his parents.
Shingadia ended up being a 30-year-old investment analyst, a big golf fan and sort of a boring guy. Not wanting too draw much attention after the picture came out, Shingadia just went on with his life during the internet firestorm he caused by supporting Europe at Celtic Manor.
Shingadia appeared on the Today Show on Friday to talk about his costume and the picture that made him famous.
It now seems like Cigar Guy will fade into the same internet cemetery as that cat that plays the piano and if all goes well, Marcel the Shell because that thing is not funny.
Anyway, Cigar Guy could be a great Halloween costume.
Adios, Cigar Guy.
