Phoenix Freeze Out Ends in Wilson’s Second Win of the Season
It wasn’t a bad weekend for Mark Wilson.
After unseasonably cold weather in Arizona forced the Waste Management Phoenix Open to endure several delays and eventually finish the tournament on a Monday, Mark Wilson, cheesehead, was the last man standing after outlasting Jason Dufner in a playoff, the third playoff in five events on the 2011 PGA Tour.
Wilson, who won just three weeks ago at the Sony Open in Hawaii, captured his second win of the young season, catapulting him to the head of the FedEx Cup standings as well as the Money List ahead of rookie upstart Jhonnatan Vegas.
Wilson already had his invitation to Augusta after winning the Sony, but his win at TPC Scottsdale put him in the field at the US Open, British Open and PGA Championship as well as the WGC-Accenture Match Play later this month as he moved from 91st to 51st in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Beginning Monday with a two-shot lead, Wilson coasted to the clubhouse with a 2-under 69 to tie Jason Dufner who shot 5-under on Sunday to finish at 18-under for the tournament, forcing a playoff. 54-hole leader, Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey, was in position to make the playoff, if not win, before he drove his ball into the water hazard on the left side of the par-4 17th hole, resulting in a 7.
“I made a 7. Next time it’ll be a little different story,” Gainey said.
Wilson and Dufner started the playoff on the 18th, both parring after less-than-perfect drives. Wilson cold-bloodily knocked in a four-and-a-half footer to take the pair to the 10th hole for the second playoff hole. Dufner missed the fairway, right, in some deep rough while Wilson split the fairway and put his approach to nine feet. Wilson confidently sank the putt for his second win of the year and fourth of his career.
“I’m just enjoying the ride here and that’s just kind of the way I’m going to look at the year here, just ride this train as long as I can,” said Wilson. “I was a little more nervous today than I was expecting. I didn’t sleep great last night. It was probably the excitement with the Super Bowl and the uncertainty of today.”
Oh, yeah. The Super Bowl. A native of Menomonee Falls, Wisc. watched his Green Bay Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night. Well, kind of. See, there was the little problem of his final round overlapping with the game, then talking to the media and finally, playing some CandyLand with his son.
“In the middle of the fourth quarter, (my son) said, `OK, the last two minutes we can watch it together.’ So we watched that last stand, and I was happy that they somehow pulled it off.”
So, it’s a pretty good week to be Mark Wilson.
Wilson is in the field at Pebble Beach this week, along with the likes of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.
Maybe Wilson should hope for some adverse weather conditions. It seems to be his thing. Rain in Hawaii and frost in Phoenix seems to equate to Mark Wilson holding a trophy at the end of the tournament.
